Taking Captive Every Thought

Writer's picture: Liza McCoyLiza McCoy

Philippians 4:8

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Through the power of Jesus Christ, we have been given ALL things to live a victorious Christian life! The Bible states, “According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue” (2 Peter 1:3). This includes godly thinking! We must be diligent and intentional about addressing our sinful thought patterns by replacing them with godly ones.  Use the chart below to identify the sinful thought patterns taking up space in your mind. Remember, sinful thought patterns can only be eliminated by replacing them with godly ones!

Sinful

Godly

lies from the enemy about God, others, and self

true

obsessive, superficial, shallow, frivolous, temporal

honest

disobedient, rebellious

just

jealous, lustful, envious

pure

hateful, spiteful, resentful

lovely

of good report

evil

virtue

discontent, unthankful, ungrateful, complaining, disbelief, doubt

praise

Proverbs 23:7

“For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he…”

The way we think determines who we are! We must focus on “bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5).
