Many of us grow sluggish and weary in the winter months. We may even question God's purpose for winter. Why would the God of the universe allow such a seemingly dreadful season to exist? Why would He add it to the beautiful cycle of all the other seasons? The Bible tells us that God has a purpose for all of nature's seasons. Psalm 74:17 states, "...thou hast made summer and winter." Ecclesiastes 3:1 explains, "To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven." The winter season appears to be a time of death, but winter brings forth more life and more abundantly.
In our own lives, we endure seasons of spiritual winter. Times that we feel surrounded by death and darkness, but God uses those times to bring forth new life. Nature teaches us many spiritual truths through the cycle of the seasons. Not only does it teach us, that our spiritual winter will be followed by spring, but that the difficult times in our lives are only for a season. Your season of winter will end one day. One day you will sense the thawing of the ground and the budding of the trees. One day you will see spring again! Trust God during the winter months. He has ordained the time for your good.
In closing, consider the following passage from Job 55:
8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.
9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
10 For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater:
11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.
